The Sari – The Most Versatile of Garments

The sari is not called the most versatile of garments for nothing. Age is no bar, from 18 to 80 flaunts this conventional Indian wear with style. The sari has its origins in antiquity. It displays India’s rich traditions of color, pattern and weave. It can do duty as staid office-wear and then make the transition to evening chic with the addition of a slinky blouse. These days everyone is sporting the sari to look their feminine best, be it slim and Sridevi sexy actresses or their grim chaperone mother. Draped by women across the centuries, the sari has history in its every turn and fold. Known by different names in various parts of the country, it is conceived differently in form and structure, usage and custom.

The innovative Indian Designer in international arena are giving it a fresh twist to make it acceptable to the over sea’s buyers. Designers take pride in ethnic traditions, and their ensembles echo the embroideries of craftsmen, celebration Indian’s cultural heritage. Crepe silk, chiffon, lace, south Indian silk, cotton and classical Benarasi are just comes in enchanting combinations – of white with multi – colors, black and red, off-white and gold. Six yards of sheer grace and elegance is what the sari is all about. The sari never loses its appeal for women of all ages.

What is essential today is to infuse contemporary sensibility into traditional Indian garments so that they become aesthetically appealing. Movies and television have contributed in no small measure to the popularity of the sari. The current lot of shop operas on television, for instance, is peopled by housewives in elaborate saris complete with brocade-edged blouses and heavy costume jewelry. Designers predict that the drifty, sheer look with a feminine feel is back with vengeance. The Designer is credited with reviving age-old styles of Indian embroidery using classic line and intricate work. They are aimed at younger women and are strong, bold, colorful and aesthetically traditional. In fact, the best way to dress up a sari is with the right king of blouse. Tight-fitting blouse crept into Indian fashion a long time ago. The glamorous heroines of Bollywood set the trend in their internationally successful films.

Girls are wearing the sari with bikini tops and even knotted collared shirts. Designers have come out with innovations like saris with belts and trendy blouse with cuts and patchwork. It is a fusing of ancient techniques and modern western skill. There is a huge demand for the sari in the Middle East and the US. The overwhelming vibrancy of color is the first thing that strikes you when you go to buy a sari. The color palette incorporates everything from traditional Indian shades to neon colors, pastels, earth tones and monochromes. Designers have worked on the sari by incorporation old techniques like embroidery. But what is interesting is that there have been several innovations in the way a sari is draped as well. It has also helped in making saris more popular among modern woman.
